The Sundarbans
The largest contiguous mangrove forest on Earth, and the shield that absorbs cyclone surge for the delta.
Covering roughly 10,000 square kilometres across Bangladesh and India, the Sundarbans hosts the Bengal tiger and hundreds of estuarine species. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and remains the delta's first line of defence against cyclonic surge.
